We have received a number of enquiries following the recent reports of two cases of Meningitis B in Kent, and we would like to provide an update.
Meningococcal group B disease is rare, particularly in adolescents and adults, although it can be serious. The overall risk to the general public remains very low, and cases typically occur sporadically rather than spreading widely. For this reason, preventative (prophylactic) antibiotics are not routinely recommended and are only used in specific circumstances.
The Meningitis B (MenB) vaccine is currently out of stock with national suppliers, affecting availability across GP practices and private providers in the UK.
We understand this may be concerning, particularly for those who were planning vaccination. Please be reassured that we are closely monitoring the situation and will offer vaccination appointments as soon as supplies become available.
In the meantime, we would like to clarify that:
- There is no indication for preventative (prophylactic) oral antibiotics for the general public.
- Antibiotics are only recommended for individuals who are close contacts of a confirmed case of meningococcal disease, and this is coordinated by public health teams.
If you believe you may have been in close contact with a confirmed case, or if you have any concerns about symptoms, please seek medical advice urgently.
We will provide further updates as soon as vaccine supplies are restored.
Thank you for your understanding.
Kind regards,
Cambridge Private Doctors.
