Coil Fitting and Removal
At Cambridge Private Doctors, we offer a full range of contraception services, including private coil (Intrauterine devices & Intrauterine systems) fittings
Types of Coils
Copper Coil (IUD): Hormone-free, effective for 5–10 years, and works immediately after fitting.
Hormonal Coil (IUS): Releases progestogen. Options include:
Mirena – effective up to 8 years
Kyleena – effective up to 5 years
The IUS (Mirena or Kyleena) – a simple, long-lasting option for contraception and period control
The Intrauterine System (IUS), often known as the hormonal coil, is a small, T-shaped device that is gently placed inside the womb by one of our experienced coil fitters. It slowly releases a small amount of the hormone progestogen directly into the womb.
The IUS is an extremely effective form of contraception – over 99% effective – and, depending on the type used, can provide protection against pregnancy for several years. Once it is in place, there is no need to remember to take a pill every day, making it a convenient, low-maintenance option for long-term contraception.
More than just contraception
One of the major benefits of the IUS is that it can also help women who experience heavy, long or painful periods. The hormone released by the IUS thins the lining of the womb, which can make periods considerably lighter, shorter and less painful. For some women, periods may eventually stop altogether.
Certain types of IUS can also be used as the progestogen component of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). In this situation, the IUS helps protect the lining of the womb while oestrogen is used to manage symptoms of the menopause.
Benefits of the IUS
- Over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy
- Provides long-lasting contraception
- No need to remember a daily contraceptive
- Can make heavy periods significantly lighter
- Periods may become shorter and less painful
- Some women may stop having periods while using it
- Can be used as part of HRT with appropriate oestrogen treatment
- Does not interrupt sex
- Fertility returns to previous levels after the IUS is removed
- Can be removed at any time by a trained healthcare professional
The Copper Coil (IUD) – hormone-free, long-lasting contraception
The copper coil, also known as an Intrauterine Device (IUD), is a small, T-shaped contraceptive device that is placed inside the womb.
The copper coil does not contain any hormones. Instead, it releases a small amount of copper into the womb, which prevents pregnancy.
The copper coil is over 99% effective and provides reliable, long-term contraception. Depending on the type of copper coil fitted, it can remain effective for 5 to 10 years. It can also be removed sooner if you decide you would like to become pregnant or change your method of contraception.
Benefits of the IUD
- Over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy
- Provides 5–10 years of contraception, depending on the device
- Contains no hormones
- No need to remember to take a pill every day
- Does not interrupt sex
- Can be removed at any time by a trained healthcare professional
- Fertility returns to previous levels after removal
- Can also be used as a highly effective form of emergency contraception when fitted within the appropriate timeframe
