An IUD is a small T-shaped plastic and copper device that is inserted into your womb by a specially trained health professional. Please note: There has been a recent change in the licence for these devices. For contraception (but not for HRT) – the use is now extended to 8 years. This means that you may have an extra 3 years before it runs out.

- There are various types and sizes available. Depending on the type; an IUD can last from 3 to 10 years. It used to be called a coil.
- An IUD is a small T-shaped plastic and copper device that is inserted into your womb by a specially trained health professional.
- The IUD is a long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) method. This means that once it’s in place you do not have to think about contraception every day or each time you have sex.
- You can use an IUD whether or not you’ve had children.
- We can insert an IUD for emergency contraception but this requires a pre-insertion discussion by telephone which will be charged at a standard 20minute telephone appointment if you do not proceed to having a coil fit.
Intrauterine system (Levonorgestrel-IUD)
What is an Intrauterine system (Levonorgestrel-IUD)
An IUS is a small T-shaped plastic device that contains progestogen. It is inserted into your womb by a specially trained health professional.
You can use an IUS whether or not you have had children.
How it works
The IUS releases a progestogen hormone into the womb which thins the womb lining so that it is less likely to accept a fertilised egg, thickens the mucus from your cervix so it’s difficult for sperm to move through and reach an egg and stops ovulation in some women.
